Josh McDaniels isn't nearly as offensive as CSI

I watched the Denver Broncos Thanksgiving game at a family celebration with small children. And when the network failed to bleep out Coach Josh McDaniels' profanity-laden tirade, I must admit I was, um, mildly amused. Sort of stoked actually.

I learned the next day that I'd had the wrong emotion. I was supposed to be offended and even outraged. As The Denver Post's Mark Kiszla wrote here and here:

What happened next for mothers, fathers and all the kiddies watching the game as part of the holiday celebration was reality TV gone bad... So much for the myth that the NFL is wholesome family entertainment. The public appetite for pumping-up violence and the unedited noise of the game's raw emotion is insatiable.

Fortunately, the NFL Network raced to apologize for their oversight. Leaving me with just one question:

Do any of these jackasses actually have children?

Watching a football game with a small child is a nightmare, not because of the occasional f-bomb, but because of nonstop promos for graphic television shows such as CSI. I turn off all of the commercials. Always. Because during the first week of the season the game segued into a promo that showed a mutilated corpse and a terrified woman, leaving my child ashen and me scrambling for the remote control.

The networks that broadcast NFL games can send their phony, hypocritical apologies to someone who cares. If they want to make football family-friendly, they should edit or ban show promos that feature dead bodies, sobbing victims, firing guns and tortured screams. As McDaniels himself might say, do your job and quit making shit up.

Denver Broncos use blog to discuss Cutler trade

I've expressed my admiration of the Broncos blog. And my disappointment in seeing our star quarterback demand a trade. Both those sentiments are doubly true today. Cutler was traded to the Chicago Bears. And the Broncos immediately gave their fans a open forum to vent their frustrations or express their excitement. Well done, team.

It's not a blog

I love the Denver Broncos. Since I have neither the spare time nor the attention span to hunt for news about the team, I listen to 104.3 The Fan during my morning drive. I get training camp updates and interviews. I also get non-stop promos for the Sports Guys' blog. There's just one little problem.

It's not a blog.

There's no RSS feed I can load into my feed reader. There's no way I can leave comments. There are no outgoing links that I can follow. There are no permalinks that make it easy to quote and share posts.

Typing isn't blogging.

You know who actually has a pretty good blog? The Denver Broncos. Religiously updated twice a day with photos and news from camp. The Broncos get it. Go team.

McDonald's shoot with Jay Cutler

I grew up in Colorado. Which means I grew up wanting to be the quarterback of the Denver Broncos. But I didn't grow up as big or as fast as maybe I'd have liked. So instead, I'm a copywriter at Karsh\Hagan. And the Broncos are led by Jay Cutler.

I spent most of today at Invesco Field at Mile High, shooting a TV spot with Cutler. He is cool and humble and surprisingly funny. The spot was directed by Jordan Brady. Who is cool and humble and extremely funny.

Over the past few months, there have been a lot of frustrations and late nights. But spending the occasional Tuesday like this, in the company of the most talented group of people you'd ever want to meet, reminds me that this is a good business we're in.
